Course Overview
The journey that the character of Madeline undertakes to ascend Mt Celeste is intended to be a test of her strength… but is in many ways a punishment for her self-perceived failings. In situations like this, communicating with others becomes key, and as such the letter writing course focuses on promoting open expression and the process of communication.
During the climb, students will uncover documents, letters, diary entries and overhear conversations that will be analysed and used to inform the content of the letters that the students write in the voice of Madeline. The course addresses the game’s prescient themes of doubt, insecurity and the importance of seeking help to provide a positive message for young people. Accuracy of tone is of particular importance, so students are invited to discuss frustration and how to convey this through language, while also identifying and using phrasal expressions and sentence structures that reinforce the sentiment being expressed. The course also reinforces the need for audience awareness in gauging the most suitable expressions to be used through exercises that examine formal and informal writing styles for various target audiences.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to apply the elements they have learned to both forms of letter writing.
