Course Overview
Diaries are a uniquely personal and intimate form of writing. Learning not only what they are but how to compose them is important to engage English as an emotional outlet, and because acquiring information from diaries forms an important part of future academic research.
The course allows for students to write diaries using the human connection found in the game that makes the story telling itself feel important. The game explores the lives of several characters, meaning students are exposed to a variety of visual and auditory stimulation to encourage more personalised expressions when assuming different roles. It’s themes of loss, isolation, mythology, family and death make it an appropriate and captivating story for adolescent students.
At a stage of development when emotional withdrawal is common, the course will move students towards accurately interpreting hidden meaning and competently composing diaries in role. Throughout the course, they will differentiate between moods and tones of text, describe characters’ thoughts and feelings, decipher metaphors, and become familiar with different writing styles.
