Course Overview
The game is built upon the importance of language to society by literally allowing words to change the in-game environment. In real world situations, we need to use compelling and evocative language to advance our point of view on substantive issues in speech and debate. Recognising the importance of argument, the persuasive writing course prepares students to become impactful writers.
The accuracy of word selection is a primary goal, reinforced by exercises involving proof reading and editing. The course emphasises the connection between words and pain, and particularly the power of words and their persuasive capacity. In one respect, students develop audience awareness that informs stylistic considerations, including word choices and tone. In another, they learn about word formation and collocation, for example antonym and synonym usage, alongside methods such as the rule of three and parallel structure in sentence construction.
Most importantly, they present different views and arguments clearly and logically by planning and writing coherent and structured texts.
The final composition employs persuasive techniques on a particular topic to consolidate their improved understanding of how to deliver an argument.
