Course Overview
Even though students consume an immense amount of information every day, it is difficult to know how to apply so much information in practice. To help students become effective readers, the reading comprehension focus of the report writing course enables students to obtain vital skillsets in a stimulating way— by solving a mystery.
The course focuses on inquiry-led individual and group work to maximise the usefulness of the source material. In each lesson, students will collect information about the oceanic planet by analysing the environment, using the resources available to design objects that can aid them in their exploration. Contextually relevant texts and audio recordings are studied during class discussions to train students in how to distinguish relevant from irrelevant information. They actively select and annotate applicable details, organize and connect clues, and use the amassed information to draw appropriate conclusions.
Throughout their journey, students also summarize their thoughts in written reports, making it necessary to revisit material and reinterpret ones findings in response to new information that is available. In addition, they are encouraged to discuss their ideas and solve problems in collaboration with their peers. All the activities promote effective reading strategies.
